Fire Suspect Arrested

On January 26, 2018, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department received multiple calls regarding a suspicious male subject, later identified as 30 year old Miles Scott of Searcy County, walking around in the area of AR Hwy 7 south and Cross Roads Cemetery Road. A witness reported seeing Scott playing with a lighter prior to Scott disappearing into the woods just south of AR Hwy 7 south and Cross Roads Cemetery Road. The Boone County Sheriff’s Department and the Arkansas State Police responded to the area and began searching for Scott. Upon the arrival of officers two small fires were located and extinguished in a creek bed just west of Cross Roads Cemetery Road in the area Scott was last seen. Then a third larger fire was located in a field and wooded area southwest of Cross Roads Cemetery Road and the area of the first fires. The third fire quickly spread out of control due to windy and dry conditions. The Krooked Creek Fire Department and the Arkansas Forestry Service responded to the scene and was able to extinguish the fire before any people or structures were damaged.

While searching the area deputies located Scott walking along the side of AR Hwy 7 south just south of where the third fire was. Scott was taken into custody without incident and found to be in possession of a Bic lighter. Also evidence was located at the scene of the fires that belonged to Scott. Scott was charged with felony unlawful burning and is currently being held at the Boone County Jail on a $100,000.00 bond.

The fire damaged approximately seven acres of land and put several people, residences, and livestock at risk. The Boone County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the Krooked Creek Fire Department and the Arkansas Forestry Service for their quick response to extinguish the fire and limit property damage. The Boone County Sheriff’s Department would also like to thank the Arkansas State Police, the Arkansas Game and Fish, and the Harrison Police Department for their assistance with searching the area for Scott.
